CAC payback period is how long it takes to recover the cost of acquiring a customer through their purchases. If you spend 100 dollars to acquire a customer who generates 25 dollars per month in contribution margin, your payback is 4 months. Shorter payback means faster reinvestment and faster growth. Payback over 12 months is considered weak unit economics for most DTC and consumer ecommerce categories.

What is the difference between nCAC and bCAC?

Blended CAC equals total ad spend divided by total customers acquired (new and returning). nCAC equals spend on new customers divided by new customers only. Returning customers are typically much cheaper to convert, so blended CAC understates the cost of acquiring genuinely new customers. nCAC is the number that matters for growth modelling.

How is contribution margin calculated for CAC payback?

Contribution margin equals revenue minus variable costs (COGS, shipping, payment fees, returns). Use contribution margin, not revenue or gross margin. If your AOV is 100 dollars and per-order COGS is 40, shipping is 8, payment fees are 3, and refunded value is 5, your contribution margin is 44 dollars per order. That is what actually pays back CAC.

What is a good CAC payback period?

For DTC and ecommerce, under 6 months is strong, 6 to 12 months is acceptable, over 12 months is concerning. For SaaS, under 12 months is strong, 12 to 18 months is acceptable, over 18 months needs attention. These benchmarks assume retention holds; if customers churn before payback, every acquisition loses money.

How does purchase frequency affect CAC payback?

Significantly. A customer who buys monthly delivers 12 contribution payments per year toward CAC recovery. A customer who buys every 4 to 6 months delivers 2 to 3 payments.
